In Marvel Comics, Ms Marvel returns as Pakistani teen

Marvel Comics is bringing Ms Marvel back as a 16-year-old daughter of Pakistani immigrants living in Jersey City named Kamala Khan.
Muslim Ms Marvel
The character, among the first to be a series protagonist who is both female and Muslim, is part of Marvel Entertainment’s efforts to reflect a growing diversity among its readers while keeping ahold of the contemporary relevance that have underlined its foundation since the creation of Spider-Man and the X-Men in the early 1960s.

Writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona, working with editor Sana Amanat, say the series reflects Khan’s vibrant but kinetic world, learning to deal with superpowers, family expectations and adolescence.

Amanat calls the series a ”desire to explore the Muslim-American diaspora from an authentic perspective” and what it means to be young and lost amid expectations by others while also telling the story of a teenager coming to grips with having amazing powers.

”I wanted Ms Marvel to be true-to-life, something real people could relate to, particularly young women. High school was a very vivid time in my life, so I drew heavily on those experiences, impending adulthood, dealing with school, emotionally charged friendships that are such a huge part of being a teenager,” said Wilson, a convert to Islam whose previous comics work includes the graphic novel ”Cairo” and series ”Air” from Vertigo.

”It’s for all the geek girls out there and everybody else who’s ever looked at life from the fringe.” This Ms. Marvel can grow and shrink her limbs and her body and, Wilson said, ultimately, she’ll be able to shape shift into other forms.

The idea came after a discussion with senior editor Stephen Wacker as he and Amanat, a Muslim-American, compared stories about growing up.

From there it germinated into a ”character for all those little girls who are growing up now the way you are growing up,” she recalled. Wilson was brought on board to write the series and the team quickly got approval from Marvel’s creative committee to move forward.

DC Comics last fall relaunched its ”Green Lantern” series with Simon Baz, an Arab American and Muslim. The character reflects writer Geoff Johns’ Lebanese ancestry and his upbringing in the Detroit area.

There have been a few others: Marvel Comics has Dust, a young Afghan woman whose mutant ability to manipulate sand and dust has been part of the popular X-Men books. DC Comics in late 2010 introduced Nightrunner, a young Muslim hero of Algerian descent reared in Paris.

The creative team said that Khan’s backstory, growing up Muslim, is an element of the story, but not the critical foundation, either. ”Kamala is not unlike Peter Parker,” said Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso of the teenager turned wall crawler.

”She’s a 16-year-old girl from the suburbs who is trying to figure out who she is and trying to forge an identity when she suddenly bestows great power and learns the great responsibility that comes with it.”

Pakistan wins snooker world title

eeee
The pair of Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Sajjad did Pakistan proud by capturing the International Billiards and Snooker Federation (IBSF) Team Event title in Carlow, Ireland, on Sunday routing Iran 5-3 in the best of nine frames final.

The formidable Pakistan duo recovered from three frames down to turn the tables on their opponents Soheil Vahedi and Amir Sarkosh. Pakistan was home 33-70, 18-68, 9-74, 88-20, 67-11, 87-15, 75-43, 58-35.

Sajjad hammered two elegant breaks of 83 and 51 in the fourth and seventh frames while Asif piled up a break of 50 in the fifth.

This is the second world crown for Asif in less than a year after his unprecedented rise in the IBSF world amateur snooker championship at Sofia, Bulgaria, on Dec 2 last.

For Sajjad, this is the maiden world title after his triumph in Korat Cup, a Thai ranking event besides finishing runner-up in the Asian Snooker Championship.Earlier, the two Pakistanis were crashed out from the 6-Reds event in pre quarter-finals on Saturday.

The victorious Pakistan team is due to arrive from Carlow in the wee hours of Tuesday. President of the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Federation (PBSF) Alamgir Shaikh, secretary Munawwar Hussain Shaikh and international referee Shabbir Hussain will also return with the victorious cueists.

Final results:

Pakistan bt Iran 5-3 (33-70, 18-68, 9-74, 88-20, 67-11, 87-15, 75-43, 58-35).

Island pops up off Gwadar

524282715e3d3
The earthquake that struck parts of Balochistan and Sindh on Tuesday was followed by the emergence of an island off the coast of Gwadar.

“The island popped up soon after the earthquake. Our staff stationed in Gwadar has reported that the island is about one and a half kilometres away from the coastline,” Dr Asif Inam, the Principal Scientific Officer of the National Institute of Oceanography, said.

“The island appears to be about 200 metres long, 20 metres high and 100 metres wide. But all this information needs to be verified scientifically. Detailed information will be available tomorrow when the staff visit the site and collect samples,” he added.

An NIO team from Karachi will also visit the site this week.

According to scientists, the Makran coastal belt is reported to have extensive reserves of frozen methane that exist in the form of gas hydrates (crystalline water-based solids physically resembling ice, formed under conditions of relatively high pressures and low temperatures) hundreds of metres below the sea floor. And whenever this highly pressurised gas finds a weak space to release some of its energy, a dome-like structure (island) is created within the waters or it emerges on the sea surface.

“The space to release energy could be formed due to tectonic movements, creating some fractures and fissures in the strata. Sometimes, the structures do not come out of the water and so go unnoticed,” Dr Inam said.

Explaining the topography of the area, Dr Inam said that it was an active seismic region where three tectonic plates — Indian, Eurasian and Arabian — were converging. “The area is required to be mapped in detail to ascertain the potentially hazardous parts. Besides, the area could be explored to overcome the energy crisis.”

According to Dr Inam, the analysis of previously tested gas samples taken from the water column of the Malan island showed that it contained methane, ethane, propane and butane.

All data pointed to the presence of microbiologically generated bacterial methane, excluding thermogenic gas.

It’s the third time in 15 years that such a phenomenon has occurred along the Balochistan coast. Earlier, islands emerged in 1999 and in 2011 at a distance of two kilometres from the Makran coast near the point where the Hingol River drains into the sea.

Both islands emerged without an earthquake and collapsed due to strong currents and winds. The same area witnessed an island’s emergence in 1945, following an earthquake.
